Project Overview
Fifteen vacuum load break switches (LBS) in a coastal town’s 15kV distribution network experienced severe salt spray corrosion and pollution accumulation after just over a year of operation. This was due to the use of standard epoxy insulation components without anti-salt spray treatment, leading to frequent audible flashovers in humid weather. Following heavy rain, two units suffered insulation breakdown, triggering short circuits that caused a 5-hour blackout for over 200 households and losses exceeding 80,000 RMB.
Our company implemented the "Specialized Coastal Salt Spray Protection Solution": full replacement with nano-hydrophobic coated insulation components and 316L stainless steel structural switches, integrated with RTV anti-pollution flashover coatings. Since the upgrade, the equipment has achieved zero flashovers for 18 consecutive months, O&M costs have dropped by 50%, cumulative loss avoidance has exceeded 100,000 RMB, and power supply reliability has leaped to 99.99%.
Exceptional Design · Precision Protection
Material Innovation: Nano-hydrophobic coating (contact angle > 150°) combined with a 316L stainless steel enclosure. It shows zero corrosion after 1,000 hours of salt spray testing and features a self-cleaning surface to inhibit pollution buildup.
Structural Reinforcement: A large-shed (umbrella) design increases creepage distance by 30%. The application of RTV anti-pollution flashover coating increases the flashover voltage in humid environments by 40%.
O&M Efficiency: A modular quick-change structure (replacement time per unit < 20 minutes) extends the maintenance cycle to 2 years and reduces manual inspection frequency by 70%.
Empowering Infrastructure Development
This solution has been incorporated into the "Technical Specifications for Salt Spray Protection of Coastal Distribution Switchgear" and applied at scale across more than 50 projects in coastal provinces like Fujian, Guangdong, and Hainan. To date, it has averted 83 salt spray-related failures and saved over 4.2 million RMB in O&M costs. By utilizing a "Material-Structure-O&M" trinity protection system, we are driving the evolution of distribution equipment from "general-purpose" to "environmentally resilient," providing a reproducible Chinese practice for coastal grid security
