Live tank breakers are well-suited for outdoor high-voltage distribution with a dispersed layout. Dead tank breakers flexibly adapt to both indoor and outdoor applications, especially in space-constrained substations or where compact installation is required.
In a live tank breaker, the arc chamber is mounted at the top or side of the column, exposed to ambient air. In a dead tank breaker, the arc chamber is placed inside the metal tank, fully sealed.
The core difference is the arc-extinguishing medium. A VCB uses a high vacuum inside a sealed ceramic or glass envelope — the vacuum rapidly diffuses ions and metal vapor after current zero, achieving arc extinction in <10 ms. An SF₆ CB uses sulfur hexafluoride gas, which has strong electron affinity — it captures free electrons to form heavy negative ions, quickly depleting the arc channel's conductivity.
